Cruel
But Necessary (2005)
- feature film
"A Doll's House played with humor for the video age" says Ken Eisner in "Variety." |
Co-produced by Lynne Moses. Written and produced by film's lead, Wendel Meldrum. Produced and directed by Saul Rubinek. Produced by Elinor Reid. Cinematographer Steve Ackerman. Edited by Chris Kern. Tells the story of Betty Munson's strange journey of self-discovery and soul-awakening in the traumatic years following the revelation, on videotape, of her husband's infidelity. Her marriage over, struggling to raise her teen-age son alone, Betty becomes driven to discover other secrets that may surround her and so she videotapes every aspect of her life during the gradual disintegration of her comfortable upper middle-class existence. Sometimes used as an eavesdropping device, other times as a confessional, Betty's camera dispassionately records the layers of family and personal dynamics. The film is seen entirely from the viewpoint of Betty's video camera resulting in a "surveillance tape" that is a kind of voyeurism of the absurd.
Winner - Outstanding Actress in a Female Role - Wendel Meldrum - 2007 Winnipeg International Film Festival
Official Selection - Cinequest, Toronto Film Festival and more. |

Devil's Dream - by Lynne Moses & Ben Moses; adaptation of Lee Smith's novel "The Devil's Dream"
Drama. This steamy, fictional saga traces the development of country music through a hot-blooded, sweet-souled country singer who finds her voice as angels and devils fight for her soul. |
Three generations of a talented Appalachian family wrestle their demons as religion and music battle for their souls. Devil’s Dream is a story for today, when society struggles between the disappointments of secularism and the confines of religion.
It says that we will find our unique and glorious voices when
we speak from our hearts as we draw power from spirit.
Katie Cocker is the grandaughter of Kate Malone, a fiddle-playing beauty with a merry laugh, and Moses Bailey, the son of a backwoods Baptist preacher, consumed by his fruitless efforts to receive God’s “sign.” The struggle between Kate and Moses' passions lives on in Katie's veins. Katie's mother, Alice, and Uncle Zeke took after Moses and devote themselves to the Primitive Baptist Church, while the happiest days of her childhood are spent with the "sinning" side of the family, Uncle R.C. and Uncle Durwood and their wives and children. Katie's aunts and cousin even become country music legends, The Grassy Branch Girls. When Katie grows up, she breaks with her judgemental mother and Uncle Zeke to pursue life in the music business. Her bumpy road, involving a baby struck with polio, a period as a travelling honky tonk starlett with a sexy, but dangerous husband, eventual triumph on the Grand Ole Opry, a hollow crossover period spent in living hard in California, and the tragic loss of her best-matched husband, a fellow country music star. After descending into self-destruction, Katie claws her way back to herself and "finds her own voice" by reuniting the passions of Kate Malone and Moses Bailey in her soul.
